SPLEEN - Traumatic rupture (delayed)

Description
A slightly enlarged spleen showing an extensive and organising subcapsular haematoma (the capsule has been stripped and removed to display the haematoma).
History
This man was admitted to Hospital at the age of 29 following the onset of acute abdominal pain some 3-4 hours before. The pain radiated to both shoulder-blades, but not to the back. an exploratory laparotomy was undertaken and the lesion discovered with a moderate amount of blood lying free in the abdominal cavity. Subsequently a history of being involved in a motor-vehicle accident three weeks before was elicited.
